Thank you to all the organizers and participants for a very successful weekend at the 5th Graduate Climate Conference! More recap/photos to follow, but here is our group picture:

We are pleased to announce that this year’s keynote speaker will be Professor Peter Huybers of Harvard University.

Peter got his Ph.D. from the MIT Program in Atmospheres, Oceans and Climate in 2004. Since then, he has become one of the rising stars in paleoclimatology, recently winning an extremely prestigious MacArthur Fellowship (a.k.a. the “genius grant”.) Peter’s research has focused on the great mystery of glacial cycles, using sophisticated timeseries analysis, novel proxy techniques, and simple models. This reasearch has helped advance our understanding of how changes in orbital parameters (Milkankovitch cycles) provoke a physical response from the climate system.

We are greatly looking forward to hearing from Peter at the GCC!

Some members of the MIT GCC Organizing Committee visited the 2011 conference site yesterday to walk through the conference. We’re really excited about the location! The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is on Cape Cod and just steps away from the beach. Fortunately, it won’t be so warm and inviting by the time the conference rolls around, so we’ll be able to focus on the talks! Check out photos of the location:

We are still working on the acceptances and notices. In a few weeks we should have a full attendee list. This process is difficult because we got many great abstracts, but we are hard at work to craft a conference that will be educational and interesting for everyone. We will also publish a schedule soon. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please write us at gcc-2011@mit.edu.

We are still in the process of reviewing abstracts, but should be emailing out decisions in the next few weeks.

The deadline to submit an application to attend the GCC as an undergraduate has been extended to August 1. Please see http://gcc2011.scripts.mit.edu/?page_id=96 for more information and the application.

The GCC 2011 application forms are now live. There is the regular graduate application and a new undergraduate application. The forms are powered by Google Docs. Please contact us if you have any questions or problems regarding the forms.
