Logistics

Presentations

We would like to emphasize that the content of your presentation should be pitched toward a GENERAL EARTH SCIENCE audience. The conference participants constitute a diverse collection of scientists from a variety of disciplines, so please make time/space to explain (or, better yet, avoid) technical jargon that might be unfamiliar to your colleagues!

For those with oral presentations, please bring your presentation on a USB drive to upload onto the presentation computer. We will have both a Mac and a PC available.

For those presenting posters, the poster display panels have dimensions of 47 inches by 47 inches, so please design your poster to fit in that space. Note that this is different from the size we stated in the original notification email. All posters must have a title (in large letters) and author(s) names, and make sure that your poster is legible from a distance of at least 4 ft.

Lodging

We are providing optional Boston lodging with student volunteers on Thursday October 28 and/or Sunday October 30. If your need for Thursday/Sunday lodging has changed since your original registration, please contact gcc-2011@mit.edu ASAP.  If you did request Thursday/Sunday lodging, you will be contact directly by your host to arrange logistics.

We are providing lodging at the conference on Friday and Saturday nights at the Inn on the Square in Falmouth, MA.  You will share a hotel room with a conference attendee of the same gender. We will provide transportation between the lodging and conference site.

Transportation

———————————————————————————
Conference-provided Transport between Boston/MIT and the GCC/Woods Hole:

The conference-provided buses will be departing 21 Ames St on MIT campus (see map) at 10am on Friday October 28, arriving at the GCC/Woods Hole around noon.  We recommend arriving at the bus stop by 9:45am.  (Full address of the stop: 21 Ames St, Cambridge, MA 02139)

Getting from the Airport to MIT:
MIT is accessible via public transport (the MBTA or ‘T’).  From the Airport, take the Silver Line bus ($2 cash) to South Station, and then transfer to the Red line subway inbound towards Alewife. The MIT stop is called “Kendall/MIT”.  After exiting the subway station, follow the map to the bus stop on Ames St. (a 3-5min walk).
Overall, allow up to an hour to get from the airport to MIT.

Attendees staying in Boston on the night of the 27th will likely be hosted near the Red line, however, when you are assigned a host you should coordinate directly with them.

Getting from the GCC back to Boston/MIT:

Conference-provided buses will depart the GCC/Woods Hole at 3pm on Sunday arriving at MIT at 5:30-6pm. We will be making a stop at the airport (at 5-5:30pm) along the way for those with flights early on Sunday evening.

If you did not indicate on the registration form that you needed a ride but would like one, please send us an email ASAP: gcc-2011@mit.edu

The Falmouth Peter Pan stop is a 2 minute walk from the conference Hotel: The Inn on the Square, 40 North Main St. Falmouth, Massachusetts 02540. The Woods Hole Peter Pan stop is closer to the conference, and if you are arriving before 6pm on Friday there is a shuttle to take you to WHOI.
